There is a lot to do in September for seniors preparing to submit college applications. Here’s a checklist to help you stay on track. Most Northwood School students take five classes. I tell them that college applications is like a sixth class, at least for the first three months. Give your applications and the college search 30-45 minutes a day these first three months, and you’ll be fine.

  • Make sure you know who your college counselor is. See Mr. Spear or Mrs. Moore in the College Guidance office if you don’t.
  • Log in to the Family Connection (Naviance) site. Update your “Colleges I’m Thinking About” list.
  • Attend some of the many sessions with college admissions representatives who visit campus.
  • Meet with your counselor; discuss early decision and early action; finalize list of colleges. Bring a list of colleges to which you may apply with you to your meeting with your college counselor.
  •  If applicable, meet with your coach(es) to discuss possible good-match colleges.
  • If you expect to compete in Division I or II intercollegiate athletics, register with the NCAA Eligibility  Center, if you have not done so yet: www.eligibilitycenter.org.
  •  Write two college essays. Ask your English teacher to review and make suggestions. Your English teacher will assign at least one college essay in the first quarter.
  •  Collect all application forms, including supplements. Learn which colleges accept the Common Application (see www.commonapp.org) and what application supplements those colleges require.
  • Create a CommonApp account, if you haven’t already.
